The Great American Cooking Story is a six-episode documentary video series created over the course of a 10-day, cross-country train trip. With 5 hours or less in each city, I sought out to tell the stories of how chefs and restaurant owners impact the revitalization of America's urban neighborhoods. Each episode is presented as a short documentary on one city and one neighborhood's fight to navigate the changes brought as new people--and new food--begin to move into the community.
In Episode 03, I examine the first neighborhood chosen for President Barack Obama's Promise Zone Initiative, which makes federal grant money available for revitalization efforts in select neighborhoods across the country. San Antonio's East Side neighborhood has a long way to go, but hope for the future lies in the efforts of two chefs who are working to ensure that the neighborhood's future is one that benefits the people who currently live there, not just the newcomers attracted to the community because of the revitalization funds.
