Web Series Submission Procedures:

  1. Read these guidelines to ensure eligibility of your project and follow the link to our FilmFreeway page to submit.
  2. Select the Primary category that best suits your content.
  3. Opt into any additional Craft Award Categories for which you would like your content to be considered. Each Craft Category opted into will cost an additional $10 regardless of the submission window and there is no limit on the number of additional Craft Award Categories for which your content can be considered.
  4. Enter the discount code CRAFTTHREE to receive your first 3 additional categories for free, as they are included with your first Primary submission fee. Should you decide to only enter into one or two Craft categories, you are obligated to use code CRAFTONE or code CRAFTTWO instead. Please note: if you use the incorrect discount code, you will be billed for the outstanding amount that you owe. Podcast and Vlog entrants are not eligible for this discount because they are not eligible for Craft awards. For IWCC members, the exclusive 60% discount applies to the total cart amount to include all Craft category selections.
  5. Submit up to 15 minutes of content for judging. Your submitted content may consist of either
    • one episode with a runtime that does not exceed 15 minutes;
    • multiple episodes with a combined runtime that does not exceed 15 minutes; or
    • a portion (up to 15 minutes) of one episode with an original runtime that exceeds 15 minutes.

Please note that all run times must include titles and end credits (if applicable) and that the festival reserves the right to screen a portion of your submitted content instead of its full length.  

If you are submitting multiple episodes or a portion of one episode, please edit your submission content accordingly and upload a video that does not exceed 15 minutes, for consideration.

Podcast and Vlog Submission Procedure:

  1. Read these guidelines to ensure eligibility of your project and follow the link to our FilmFreeway page to submit.
  2. Podcasts and Vlogs can only submit to their respective submission categories,
    • they are not eligible for Craft Awards.
  3. For Podcasts: In Film Freeway, your Project Type should be identified as “Music/Songwriting” which will accept audio files.
  4. Submit all required information and pay the required fee(s) in accordance with the relevant submission window.

Eligible Content:

All submitted content must satisfy the following requirements:

  • The content must have been developed for online audiences. Non-exclusive development for online audiences is sufficient.
  • The content must be submitted by a creator/producer aged 18 or older.
  • At the time of submission, the series must already be accessible online or subject to online distribution.
  • If your content is unfinished or pending distribution, you may submit password-protected unreleased content or Works in Progress for consideration. You can add a password to protect your video uploads on your Film Freeway project page. If selected, you must have a screening file available by May 1, 2018.
  • The series must have been active online sometime after January 1, 2015. To be considered ‘active online’, the series must have been publicized during the appropriate time frame through either a live website, social media channels, published press releases, published content, or some other form of online activity associated with the series.
  • The content must include English subtitles to accompany any important dialogue or visual references that are not spoken or written in English.

Eligible Content Formats:

All submitted content must satisfy the definition of one of the following formats:

Web series Serialized narrative content of any genre, that fit the eligibility requirements. Series of this format may opt to submit to any number of Craft categories for award consideration.
Podcast series Serialized podcasts of the following genres: documentary, talk show, narrative/fiction, or long form.
In Film Freeway, your Project Type should be identified as “Music/Songwriting” which will accept audio files. Series of this format can only be submitted to the “Podcast” Primary category.
Vlog series Serialized content from vloggers and influencers of these genres: documentary, talk show, narrative/fiction, news/culture. Series of this format can only be submitted to the “Vlog” Primary category.

Ineligible Content Formats:

The following content formats are not eligible for screening during T.O. WebFest and will be rejected regardless of their adherence to any other requirements:

  • Commercials
  • Corporate videos promoting a product or service
  • Pornography
  • Product reviews
  • Music videos
  • Short films
  • Pilot episodes

Primary Categories and Awards:

All submitters of web series content must, at the time of submission, select an appropriate Primary category to which their content belongs. Their content will then be considered for that category’s corresponding award. To be considered for additional Primary awards, submitters may also submit the same content to additional Primary categories, or submit a new series entirely, and pay an additional Primary category fee. The Primary categories and the corresponding awards for T.O. WebFest 2018 are as follows:

In addition to the above Primary submission categories, submitters of web series content may choose to have their content considered for additional awards relating to industry Craft representation. Three Craft categories will be included with the fee for the selected Primary category, and are chosen by the submitter. A discount code will be provided in order to offset the cost of these three free categories. Submitters may optionally select additional Craft categories for $10 USD each, if they want their content to be considered for awards in these additional categories, with no limit.  If the submitter does not opt in to any additional categories, they will still be considered for the Primary category they have submitted to, the three included craft categories selected, and possibly for an Achievement Awards if eligible based on the criteria defined below. The award categories are as follows:

Best Documentary & Lifestyle A continuing series where the main focus is non-fiction.
Best Science Fiction & Fantasy A continuing series where the focus is science fiction, fantasy, or a combination of the two.
Best Family Content Content that successfully appeals to and engages people of all ages.
Best Podcast Serialized podcasts of the following genres: documentary, talk show, narrative/fiction, news/culture. Series of this format can only be submitted to the “Podcast” Primary category.
Best Vlog Serialized content from vloggers and influencers of these genres: documentary, talk show, narrative/fiction, news/culture. Series of this format can only be submitted to the “Vlog” Primary category.

 

Craft Awards
Conditions
Best Screenplay Awards an original screenplay that contains good pacing, strong dialogue, and a strong story structure.
Best Directing Awards the successful execution of story and tone.
Best Cinematography The successful use of photography to enhance the director’s vision. Eg: lighting, framing, shot composition.
Best Sound Design The successful creation and editing of all sound present in the submitted body of work.
Best Visual Effects Includes both the crafting of digital elements and animation as a means to enhance the narrative.
Best Animated Content A continuing series where storytelling is achieved primarily through animation techniques.
Best Editing Editing should successfully support the both the director’s vision and the tone of the series.
Best Music Consists of an original composition that successfully underscores the tone of the series.
Best Lead Performance A performance, not identified by gender, of the character that is the focus of the narrative.
Best Supporting Performance A performance, not identified by gender, of a supporting character that directly supports the narrative.
Best Ensemble Performance This award honours all acting performances in the series, with a focus on successful cohesion and tone.

 

All Official Selections will also be considered for the following Achievement Awards in accordance with their specific selection criteria:

Conditions
Best Web Series Open to all participating web series. Finalists will be determined by highest overall scores as determined by the Festival Jury.
Best Canadian Series Open only to web series produced in Canada. Finalists will be determined by highest overall scores as determined by the Festival Jury.
Triple Threat Auteur Open to any one person who occupied at least three of the following nine key roles in connection with a selected web series, as listed in your Film Freeway submission form: creator, producer, showrunner, writer, director, director of photography, editor, distributor, and lead actor.
Best LGBTQ+ Story The series that champions pushing representational boundaries and evolving LGBTQ+ cultural narratives.
IWCC Canadian Spotlight The series you couldn’t imagine taking place anywhere else. This series uses Canada not just as a backdrop, but weaves their community, values and landmarks as significant drivers of their characters’ journey.

 

Rules:

  1. All submitters must submit their content to T.O. WebFest through Film Freeway at https://filmfreeway.com/TOWebFest.
  2. All submitters must submit to at least 1 Primary category. One can not submit to any Craft categories without also submitting to a Primary category.
  3. A single submission may be considered for more than one Primary category provided that an additional fee is paid for each additional Primary category.
  4. Multiple projects may be submitted for consideration provided that a separate entry with additional submission fee is paid for each project.
  5. All submission fees are non-refundable.
  6. Submitting does not guarantee your series as an Official Selection of T.O. WebFest 2018.
  7. The Festival prefers that the submitter is the creator/producer of the project, however in order to submit content on the behalf of its creator/producer, the contact information of the primary creator/producer must be provided in order to document them as the festival’s main point of contact.
  8. The submitter must have obtained legal copyright to publicly screen their submitted content and all intellectual property contained therein including, but not limited to, music, lyrics, written work, photos, video content, artwork, and media excerpts.
  9. The creator/producer of each Official Selection will be offered 2 complimentary passes to T.O. WebFest 2018.

Jury Information:

  • T.O. WebFest and the IWCC maintain that the collective members of the Festival Jury reflect an international selection of esteemed industry professionals of diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • T.O. WebFest and the IWCC reserve the right to appoint all members of the Festival Jury.
  • The Festival Jury determines all Official Selections.
  • The Festival Jury selects the nominees and winners in each category, based on the submitter’s selection of Primary and Craft categories for consideration.
  • If the Festival Jury or T.O. WebFest determines that an incorrect category may have been chosen for a submission, the submitter will be contacted regarding reclassification.
  • T.O. WebFest and the IWCC selects nominees and winners in each Achievement Award Category based on scoring information provided by the Festival Jury.
  • All decisions regarding official selections and award nominees and winners are non-disputable.
  • The identities of the Festival Jury members will be posted on the T.O. WebFest website after submissions close with the exception of any that choose to remain anonymous.  
  • Staff members of T.O. Webfest, or members of the Board of Directors of the IWCC are permitted to submit their web series, but they may not participate in any jury categories in which their submissions are entered.
  • General Members of the IWCC organization may be considered as potential jurors, and may submit series projects, and be eligible for awards.  
  • Jurors cannot judge/vote for their own work that has been submitted to T.O. WebFest for consideration.

Terms & Conditions:

  • T.O. WebFest reserves the right to amend these Guidelines at any time.
  • Failure to meet the eligibility requirements will lead to disqualification.
  • Disqualification will not entitle a submitter to a refund of the submission fee.
  • By submitting your content, you represent that you have acquired all legal rights to publicly screen all content within your submission.
  • T.O. WebFest reserves the right to determine screening conditions for all Official Selections.
  • T.O. WebFest reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to add content advisory disclaimers to any content screened, if deemed necessary, for any reason.
  • If a submitter’s content is selected, a Notice of Official Selection shall be emailed to the email address provided by the submitter in their Film Freeway profile on the notification date.
  • Announcements identifying the Official Selections will be posted online on the T.O. WebFest website and social media channels Monday April 16, 2018.
  • If you have any questions about your eligibility, contact us and we will assess your submission on a case-by-case basis.
  • T.O. WebFest participants agree to not hold T.O. WebFest or the IWCC, its employees, directors and representatives responsible for any and all losses, damages, rights, claims and actions of any kind in connection with the event or resulting from acceptance, possession or use of any prize.
  • All provincial & federal laws apply.
